Portable Appliance Testing

Since April 1st, 1990 and in accordance with the ‘Electricity at Work Regulations’ (1989), all employers, employees and the self employed have an obligatory requirement to carry out testing on all portable electrical appliances.

Failure to comply with the requirements could lead to prosecution and may void insurance policies, leading to compensation claims against the company.

The requirements apply in the following circumstances –

  • Where appliances are used by employees
  • Where the public may use appliances in such places as hospitals, schools, hotels, retail outlets, care homes etc.
  • Where appliances are supplied or hired
  • Where appliances are repaired or serviced

A portable appliance is one which –

  • Can be carried from place to place between periods of use
  • Is connected to a power supply via a plug fixed to a flexible supply cable.
